The Hornberg Soaring Flight Instruction & Training Center is located in the south of Germany directly on the northern edge of a low mountain range named the "Swabian Alb" at 680 meters MSL.
The terrain with its ridges, valleys and diverse vegetation offers ideal conditions for long range thermal soaring, mountain slope soaring and - depending on the right wind conditions - even a small wave soaring area directly to the south of the airfield can be explored. It is not without reason that the region is considered to be one of the cradles of sailplane flight.
The Hornberg Soaring Flight Instruction & Training Center has a 70-year-long history of educating people on how to fly gliders: in the 1930's with bungee-cord launched wooden-frame single-seaters, today with ultra-modern high performance sailplanes with self-launching capability.
Our experienced instructors will get you airborne and teach you everything you need to know for a successful career as a soaring pilot: from the first basics to long-range excellency.
Advanced pilots can join up directly with our cross country soaring training programme and fly with seasoned competition trainers to widen both experience and knowledge. Several one-week-long special courses each year give you the opportunity to soar to new heights!
The excellent aircraft fleet comprises modern sailplanes (single and double seaters), a self-launch-capable ASK21mi, touring motor gliders (TMG) with and without aero-towing capability, two ultralight aircraft and an aero-towing Robin Remorquer in the single-engine-piston category. All planes can be chartered with or without instructors and are equipped with FLARM units to enhance flight security. Access to high-performance aerobatic sailplanes is possible during safety- and acro-training courses. A high-power diesel engine winch for winch-launch-training is available.
Private sailplane owners will also find our facilities most suitable: lots of space for sailplane trailers, on-demand-availability of aero-tow pilots, a briefing room with internet-information based weather-briefing sessions, a recreation room with TV/video recorder/library, single and double rooms in our main building, a camping area with washing facilities, good restaurants with local specialities & international cuisine in the vicinity of the airfield offer all creature comforts necessary for an unforgettable flying holiday. Non-flying familiy members won’t regret accompanying you: scenic hiking & bike-riding trails starting at and around the airfield, historic landmarks worth a visit, museums in the region, open-air baths in the neighborhood and a wellness-oasis in the city of Aalen will make the stay worthwile for them too!
International guests from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic and even Japan and Australia have visited Hornberg Airfield and the Soaring Flight Instruction & Training Center and found it to be a most interesting, satisfying experience. Join their ranks and enlarge our international community!
